You may have seen resin dog tags, like the one pictured above, on Etsy, social media or even right here at Isy and Cris. This isn’t an item you’ll find at Petco or Chewy, mainly because it needs customization. Skilled resin artisans can do some amazing personalization from simply adding your pet’s name in stylish fonts to incorporating themed embellishments within the design. This custom work is worth the longer production time and increased cost compared to the generic accessories you can get your pup, at big box stores.

Let’s explore what resin dog tags are all about and see if they’re the perfect accessory to add to your pup’s stylish wardrobe.

Resin dog tags are not only popular but also a durable option for fun and fashionable pet identification. Made from epoxy and/or UV resin, these tags are customizable and can feature a wide variety of colors, designs, and personal details like your pet's name and contact information. They are lightweight and resistant to water, making them ideal for active dogs and dogs of all sizes

The importance of water proofing cannot be ignored. Your pets name and other information can be placed on the tag in various ways, such as vinyl transfer, stickers decal, hand written, direct embedding, engraving and laser etching. The resin artist should seal any lettering with resin to make it waterproof and prevent peeling.

Another option which is new and becoming popular is adding QR codes to the back of pet ID tags. This option is great because you can include tons of information without compromising the design of the tag. However, that is based on personal preference of course. Some of our own customers have expressed a dislike to the QR code, believing it to take away from the design. We’ve been on the fence about it too!

How to determine if a resin dog tag is of good quality and well made?

  1. Smooth Finish: A high-quality resin dog tag should have a smooth, glossy finish without any rough or uneven surfaces. It should feel polished with no sharp edges that could irritate your dog’s skin.

  2. Clear Design: The design, name, and contact details should be legible and well-sealed beneath the resin. Blurry text or poorly encapsulated designs could indicate poor craftsmanship or the use of low-quality materials.

  3. Durability: Check the resin for signs of cracking, chipping, or bubbles. A good-quality tag will be free from imperfections like air bubbles, which weaken the structure over time.

  4. Even Shape: The tag should have a consistent, even shape with no warping or bending. Warping could indicate that the resin wasn't properly cured or was exposed to heat during the manufacturing process.

  5. Secure Attachment: The hole for attaching the tag to the collar should be reinforced and smooth. If it feels fragile or uneven, it may break easily when attached to your dog’s collar.

  6. Water Resistance: A well-made resin dog tag will be completely sealed, making it waterproof. If water seeps into the design or text area, it's a sign of poor sealing.

How to Care for your Resin Pet Tag?

Caring for resin dog tags is simple and helps prolong their durability and appearance. Here's how you can care for them:

  1. Cleaning: Wipe the tag with a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt or debris. For tougher grime, use mild soap and water, avoiding harsh chemicals that can damage the resin.

  2. Avoid Heat: Keep the tag away from extreme heat, as resin can warp or become brittle under high temperatures. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight for extended periods.

  3. Check for Damage: Regularly inspect the tag for any cracks or sharp edges. If any sharp edges develop, lightly sand them down with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface.

  4. Store Properly: If your dog isn’t wearing the tag, store it in a cool, dry place to prevent any damage or discoloration.

  5. Handle with Care: Although resin tags are durable, they can still break if subjected to heavy impact, so handle them gently when attaching or removing them from your dog's collar.
